Synopsis:
After a gap of quite a few months, I finally managed to get my hands on The Postcard Killers. I was first introduced to James Patterson through the film Along Came a Spider, which was based on his novel of the same name. The movie impressed me so much that I immediately picked up the book—and I've been hooked on James Patterson ever since, especially his Alex Cross series.
The Postcard Killers follows Jacob Kanon, a New York detective whose daughter is brutally murdered while on her honeymoon in Europe. Determined to find those responsible, Jacob travels across countries, following a trail of murders linked by cryptic postcards sent to journalists before each crime. What follows is a fast-paced investigation filled with shocking discoveries, dangerous leads, and a relentless hunt for a pair of elusive killers.
The real standout for me was Dessie Larsson.
Dessie is a local journalist who genuinely wants to produce thoughtful, meaningful journalism rather than simply chase headlines. Working in a male-dominated newsroom, she's determined to prove herself through the quality of her work rather than sensationalism. What makes her particularly interesting is her background in psychology. It allows her to notice patterns and make connections that both Jacob and the Swedish police overlook. More than once, I found myself thinking that she possessed many of the qualities I usually expect from the main protagonist. In many ways, she ended up being the character I was most invested in.

My Thoughts
Jacob Kanon has one goal throughout the novel: to catch the people responsible for his daughter's murder, no matter what it takes. His grief and determination drive the investigation, and his connections from previous cases, combined with some solid detective work, help move the story forward. That said, I never fully connected with Jacob as a protagonist. He does everything you'd expect from a determined detective, but I felt he lacked the charisma and that certain "X-factor" that makes James Patterson's best protagonists—like Alex Cross—so memorable. The real standout for me was Dessie Larsson.

What Works Well
The investigation moves at a brisk pace and rarely loses momentum. The mystery unfolds steadily, revealing clues without making the solution feel too obvious.
The emotional stakes remain high because Jacob's involvement is deeply personal.
What Didn't Work for Me
While the story kept me turning the pages, it never quite reached the level I've come to expect from James Patterson.Jacob, despite being central to the story, wasn't as compelling as some of Patterson's other protagonists. Ironically, I found myself far more interested in Dessie and wished she'd had an even bigger role in the investigation.
Content Warning
This book contains graphic descriptions of murder scenes, violence, blood, and disturbing crime details.Final Verdict
The Postcard Killers combines suspense, action, and drama into a thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. The gruesome murders and the personal nature of Jacob's investigation create a constant sense of tension that makes it difficult to put the book down. While I wouldn't rank it among James Patterson's strongest novels, it's still an engaging read and one that thriller lovers are likely to enjoy. If you're already a fan of Patterson, or simply enjoy dark, fast-paced crime fiction, then it's definitely worth picking up.
